EPISODE 20~ GUEST BLOG: Sell Your Music: How To Make Money Composing Stock Songs

By Evan Barrett

With the cost of home music studios coming down dramatically, millions of musicians have gained access to an affordable way to record their music.

At the same time, this digital revolution leads to more new video content created each day than you could watch in a lifetime. From podcasts to Youtube, from Netflix to Snapchat Stories, all of this new content needs background music.

And that’s where stock music comes in. Stock music is affordable music written to fill this growing need.

Because videographers can’t legally take an existing song and put it in their videos, a whole marketplace has opened up for songwriters like you and me to license our songs consistently.

I should know, I’ve been making hundreds of dollars a month in passive income doing it!

Here are the basics:

First you write and record good music – but it does not need to be a Billboard Platinum hit. In fact, the best selling songs seem to be those that convey a consistent emotion (joy, sorrow, excitement).

Second, you register with a stock music site like AudioJungle, Songtradr, or Pond 5 (my recommendation for beginners). Then you upload your tracks there.

Third, in order for people to find your songs, the most important thing to do is to spend a lot of time thinking about how you tag each song with keywords (you can download a free guide to keyword tagging here).

Finally, you’re going to want to rinse and repeat. To start earning consistent money, you need to upload hundreds of tracks.

But trust me when I say that there is no feeling as good as knowing that your music is out there getting heard – and that people value it enough to pay for it!

Guest Bio: Evan Barrett

Evan is an attorney by day —and Barrett’s his middle name, not his last name— but side hustles as a musician by night. He’s earned thousands of dollars in passive income through music licensing, and his songs have been used by clients like NPR and Verizon. He’s passionate about teaching other musicians how to license their music.

EPISODE 18~ GUEST BLOG: Help With Medical Bills: Expert Tips For Reducing Hospital Costs

By Tina Pashley, Medliminal

Here are our consumer Tips for finding and fighting overcharges on hospital and other medical bills:
Immediately request a detailed, itemized statement that details the items and services you received and the charges associated with each.
Analyze each line item and make sure you agree with each charge. Do you remember receiving that item or service? Does the associated price seem reasonable?
Any questions should be directed to the facility billing department. If your questions are not answered to your satisfaction, escalate the situation by requesting the department manager or even write a certified letter to the CFO.
Make sure you are familiar with your benefits.
Go to the appropriate facility (example: Are you going to an emergency room for non-emergency situations that can be solved by an urgent care?).
Negotiate beforehand, when possible.
When a situation can’t be resolved on your own, contact a reputable medical cost containment company, such as Medliminal.

EPISODE 17~ GUEST BLOG: Turo: Rent Your Car as a Side Hustle By Kyle Clark, Turo Fleet Owner

1 – Know your goals

Do you want to use Turo as a way to supplement your income? How about using the platform to afford your dream car, sharing it occasionally on weekends or when at work? You’ll want to know what kind of owner you’re going to be, because the investments required in time, finances, and effort will vary greatly.

Will you meet renters at your home, or choose to deliver to the airport? What about requests for delivery to a custom location? Good news, Turo has many settings that allow you to choose what kinds of requests and bookings you offer.

2 – Know your market

Before placing your vehicle on Turo, or considering purchasing a second vehicle to rent full-time, get a feel for your market. Do several searches well out into the future on Turo for the city and airport(s) in your area. See what kinds of cars are available, what they usually rent for, and how busy they are. Next, check out the competition. Look at rates from the big rental agencies for various types of vehicles. Do you already own something that you could rent at a lower cost, while still putting money in the bank? Or, can you provide a unique car no one else has? Find these advantages.

3 – Know your processes

Plot out your car’s listing page before opening it up for business. Make sure you’re documenting any and all procedures for meeting renters, handing off your keys, and returning the car. List any special rules or requests you have, so there are no surprises. Craft a set of clear, thorough messages that you can copy to communicate with customers through each step of the rental.  How will you handle maintenance, and the rare mechanical failure? Problems can and will happen. How prepared you are will greatly affect the renter’s experience, and your reputation. Study Turo’s support articles and policies; you’ll know exactly what to say when a problem arises, and what you or Turo can offer to fix it. Create relationships with mechanics, car washes, detailers: especially those who are mobile and above to handle short-notice requests.

EPISODE 16~ GUEST BLOG: Questions and Answers About The Federal Trade Commission’s Refund Program For Consumers

FTC.gov

Q:

Will I get all my money back? How long will it take? Can I speak to someone about my claim form or check?

A:

Sometimes the FTC is able to get people all their money back. In other cases, we’re not. If that happens, the FTC gives as much money back to each buyer as possible. The exact amount will depend on how much the defendants are able to pay, how much the court orders for refunds, and how many people bought the product.

We send out checks as soon as we can. There are several steps in the process.

EPISODE 14 ~ GUEST BLOG: How to Win Sweepstakes in 5 Easy Steps

By Carolyn Wilman, “The Contest Queen”

As someone who always believed winning was possible, when I discovered people enter sweepstakes as a hobby in 2001 I was quickly hooked. At first I made every rookie mistake possible, disqualifying myself from more giveaways than I can possibly fathom. Once I applied both my marketing background and organizational skills to my hobby, not only was my Online Sweepstaking System created, my prizes began to come in steadily. Here are the top 5 steps I recommend to anyone that wants to begin winning:

Create a new email address only for entering. This separates your hobby from your personal or business life making it easier to find winning notifications and keep spam under control. Be sure to also set up email notification rules for the words ‘congratulations’, ‘win’ and ‘winner’ to help you easily spot a winning notification.

2) Use a sweepstakes aggregate to quickly and easy find legitimate giveaways. Aggregates are websites that specialize in sharing legitimate sweepstakes, contests and giveaways. Sweepstakes are listed many different ways making it easy for you to find what or how you want to enter. Such as: travel, cash, vehicles, etc. or single, daily, or weekly entries. They also list short rules, allowing you to quickly determine if you are even eligible to win, how often you can enter, entry method, plus any special clauses. I recommend starting by entering single entry only sweepstakes. This allows you to get familiar with the hobby while giving you even odds of winning.

3) Use tools to help you enter faster. My tool of choice is RoboForm. Not only does it fill contest forms, I use it to organize all my sweepstakes. (PLUS, all my followers get up to 40% OFF!) When I first started ‘sweeping’ I entered every online entry form manually. Once I installed RoboForm I wondered why I waited so long. Not only did it cut my entry time in half, it eliminated most data entry errors.

4) Use all 5 entry methods to increase your odds of winning. They are: in-person, mail-in, phone-in, online, and via mobile phone. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, which is why it’s important to try your luck every winning opportunity you find. Keep your eyes and ears open at all time for the word win, as luck can be found in the most unlikely places.

5) Always read the rules. I usually make this my #1 tip as it’s the one that people do the least and it’s the most important as you do not want to disqualify yourself.
You are reading them to find out:
·       Are you even eligible to win?
·       How often can you enter?
·       When does the contest end?
·       Any specific rules you need to follow?

Rules could be things like submitting a picture or using a specific hashtag.I once had to sumo wrestle someone for the grand prize because I skimmed the rules, versus reading them. (I got smunched and lost!) Now that you have the key steps to begin a successful sweepstakes hobby, what is the first prize you would like to win?

EPISODE 12~ GUEST BLOG

By Checkbook.org

How much would you like to pay per night for a room at a four- or five-star hotel in Seattle? How about $77? Does that seem fair?

Rather hit the Big Apple? We found an $88-per- night bargain at the luxury Roosevelt Hotel.
How about Chicago? Is $84 for a room at the Palmer House Hilton in the Loop reasonable?

For several years, we have plugged away at Priceline.com and —using our
unique, strategic method— almost always secured rates for high-end hotel rooms far lower than those offered at competing websites.

EPISODE 11~ GUEST BLOG: Make More: How to Turn Your Side Hustle Into Your Main Gig —Without Risking it All

By Redd Horrocks, Voiceover Artist

Working a side gig can be great. You get to stretch out, be your own boss, and call the shots…at least for a little bit of your day. But when you’re thinking about making the full time switch, how do you make sure you are ready? Here are five tricks to help you make the leap.
Make a Realistic Budget.

Take the time to go through all your expenses. Make sure you include absolutely everything and make a realistic assessment of where your money goes. Then look at trimming that. What could
you give up if you had to? Can you live without that monthly massage? What about going on vacation? Do the honest numbers of what you’d like to spend money on, and what you have to spend money, and make sure your income hits your bare minimum with room left over.

Bank Your Paycheck
If you’re getting close to the switch, stop spending your paycheck from your regular job. Put it into a specific savings account to use as a buffer for if your new business falls on hard times. Make
sure your new income can legitimately support you for at least three months. If you need to dip into your paycheck during the third month, you’re not ready for your new gig to support you.
Analyze Your Time Will having more time to spend on your side gig help it grow? Are you going at a pace you can’t handle right now? How do you want to spend your time? If you are spending all your free time on
your side gig, it’s generating solid revenue, and you have no time for yourself, then it’s definitely time to think about flying the nest and being on your own

Get Your House in Order
Do the research on health insurance, think about setting up an IRA, look into the benefits of forming an LLC or S-corp for tax purposes. Set up a business bank account and a business savings account. Research estimated taxes. Make sure you know how to move your money into all the right places, so you aren’t
hit with an unexpected tax bill, medical expense, or adding zero to your retirement fund.
Find Your Joy Do you love your side hustle? If it fulfills you and makes you happy, then you’re good to go. If you find it stressful or boring, it might not be the right call to switch all your income to being selfperpetuating. Be honest with yourself and do what honestly will make you happy. When you’re setting up your new schedule, think about the things you can do for you, and consider how
you’ll keep up interactions with actual people. Take a lunch break.

Go for a coffee. Join a Facebook group of like-minded people. Set up your support network. Love your life.
