EPISODE 47~ FIND YOURS: Unclaimed Money Heroes: Why Some People Search for Missing Money For Others

Find unclaimed money with The Easy Money Show

For all the thousands of people who never search for their unclaimed money and don’t even realize it’s legitimate, there is always somebody who’s fascinated by this missing money, searches for others, and tries to let them in on the good news. This “do gooder” trend is our featured “find yours” segment for this episode. My guest is Steve Mondros of New Jersey who has been interested in unclaimed money ever since he was a kid. Welcome, Steve!

How did you first hear about unclaimed money and what sparked your interest?
in 6th grade, our teacher gave us Reader’s Digests with an article about a company called Tracers, Inc. -how I got interested-then I saw that the local papers had annual advertisements with name lists-that did it!

Have you ever found unclaimed money for yourself or your own family?
My wife and I

If so, how much money was it, what business was it from, and how did it get lost?
seven thousand for me-from my employer at the time-from a stock option-I had moved, gave them my new address, but they sent my money to my old address.$155 for my wife from a hospital-she was in a nursing home, they sent the money to her there after she had gone home.

When did you first start searching for unclaimed money for other people?
I looked in the newspaper ads starting in the 1980’s, then tried looking for charities, hospitals, etc, around 1999.

What was your goal with your searches?
I was hoping to be a 1-man charity operation.  Completely non-profit for me. It’s great to be Santa Claus by proxy!

Tell me some of the colleges and schools you have searched for and what you found.
Just about every college has money-I’ve contacted a few-1 college, in Philly, got 18 thousand.

You have also searched for hospitals.  That’s a great idea.  What are some of the most interesting unclaimed money accounts you found for them?
Probably every hospital has money, but since most don’t collect the money-they just refer the info to another department, I’ve not done much contacting lately.

How do you contact these groups to share the good news and how do they respond?
I send the printouts and explain that I don’t want any of the money and ask them to Google the websites/phone numbers to show that they are legit.  Most either ignore me or turn the info over to their legal/financial/accounting departments.

Have any of the groups you’ve found money for actually followed up and cashed in?
A few charities/schools/etc have collected their money.
I had some success with a bunch of places in the late 1990’s-and a few last year,

Associations were another of your targets.  And there’s one in particular that you’ve been trying and trying to reach with the good news with no luck.  Tell us that story.
I’m a member of AARP-and one of their magazines has an article about how people can collect unclaimed money-so I\’ve emailed, called, written-no response from them-in PA alone, the state site can only list their first 400 accounts-and then they ask me for contributions.

You contacted me for help because you know I’ve covered unclaimed money at ABC News, then at the Washington Post and now here on Easy Money.  Tell my listeners what you wanted help with.
If you have any ideas-or contacts with any charities, organizations-ideas about why I get no response, please let me know.  Thank you!

Way back on episode 5 I interviewed a teenage girl who does sometihng similar to what you’ve been trying to do.  She finds unclaimed money for charities.  The way she lets them know is by emailing them a screen shot of the unclaimed money listing, rather than asking them to click a link to see it, since people are so worried about clicking scammy links.  But, other than that, I don’t have any magic solution.  So I want to crowdsource your dilemma.  Dear Easy Money listeners: Please, folks, send me ideas for how Steve can share good news about unclaimed money with various worthy groups WITHOUT them thinking it’s a scam.  Please go to EasyMoneyShow.com and leave me a voicemail on the home page.  Or email me from the contact page.  I look forward to your smart ideas.  Meanwhile, Steve, since you know I write for the Washington Post, you looked the newspaper up too.  What did you find?
The Post has multiple unclaimed money accounts, in DC and elsewhere.
Please go to www.unclaimed.org and click on the Delaware site and Search for Washington Post. Delaware has money for places/people worldwide. Then, go to www.missingmoney.com  and create a free account and do profiles for Washington Post, Post Washington and The Washington Post. that site doesn’t list every state (not DE) but many.

You’ve got some advanced tips for searching for unclaimed money that even I had never heard. I’m going to state the tip and you explain it, OK?
•Using newspapers.com:
I can see ads dating back to 1920…

•Searching older records:
some states don’t have older records online-PA, NY, NJ… call and ask for a complete search.

•And what about searching in foreign countries?
Canada, Kenya, Australia, UK (some) and NZ all have sites..

How many unclaimed money accounts would you say you’ve found for people and groups in all?
Dozens.

And what percentage of those would you say have listened to you and claimed their money?
Maybe 20, 30 have collected…

Therein lies the problem! Unclaimed money is real. So much so that I devote a third of every Easy Money podcast to it. And it’s OUR money, not the government’s money, so somehow we need to educate people to search and claim what’s theirs.

EPISODE 46 ~ TOP TIP: Bothered by Manmade Fragrance? Know the Lingo In Order to Steer Clear

If you, like me, are bothered by the overpowering artificial scents in old products like dryer sheets all the way up to new products like scented garbage bags, there are solutions.  First of all, you should know manmade scents have been linked to several health problems, so this is real.  To steer clear, you need to know the lingo.   Unscented means that a product doesn’t have a detectable odor —but it could still contain artificial scents because manufacturers are allowed to use them in so-called “unscented” products if they are there to cover up the smell of other ingredients.  By contrast, “fragrance-free” is the label to look for if you are bothered by chemical fragrances, because it indicates no artificial smells have been added to the product whatsoever.  I will link you to several different resources for finding these fragrance-free products for your home and personal care.  at EasyMoneyShow.com/46

EPISODE 46 ~ MAKE MORE: Be an Interior Designer —As A Main Gig Or Side Hustle— Through This Cutting Edge New App

If you love home decor and have always wanted to be an interior designer, but never knew how to land clients and get started, today’s Make More segment is for you.  Introducing a new online service called Modsy.  As a designer for Modsy you create 360-degree drawings of rooms —complete with furniture and decor recommendations— so clients can SEE how their room will look before they buy a thing.   We’ll talk with a Modsy team member in a moment, about how much money you can SAVE by using Modsy instead of traditional interior design services.  But first, let’s talk about how to MAKE more through Modsy.  My first guest is Tara Smith, a Modsy interior designer. Welcome to Easy Money, Tara.

Tara, First of all, explain what Modsy is.

Modsy is a personalized home design solution that utilizes advanced 3D visualization technology to change the way consumers decorate and shop for their homes. Modsy designers create perfectly-scaled, 360-degree room renderings based on each customer’s individual style; complete with room layout, furniture, and decor recommendations.

And I know your title is interior designer, but give us more details about what you do for Modsy, from start to finish of a project?

I work for Modsy as an interior designer for their Style Network.  I create designs for clients using Modsy’s proprietary 3D imaging technology.   I create 3D, 360-degree renderings of rooms in client’s homes, so they can “try on” furniture and decor that is perfectly to scale.

What kind of background do you have, that this is a good fit for you?

In 2007 began my career by acquiring an interior design internship at Westport Yachts, assisting in the design of large scale, luxury yachts. Then I explored the area of residential design at Henredon & Schoener, a design + build company in Seattle WA. I was soon promoted to lead designer.  In 2014 I went back to school at the CIDA accredited Art Institute of Seattle to acquire my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design.  Going back to school fueled my passion for the tech side of design and so I shifted focus and began to specialize in 3D renderings and technical design documents.  When I found Modsy and saw what they were doing with not only design but 3D technology, I knew it would be a great fit for me.

For those listening who are intrigued, what sort  of background might they need to work for Modsy?

Anyone with a relevant degree (interior design, art history, graphic design, architecture, etc.) can apply for Modsy’s Style Network, making it a great side hustle for recent grads looking to build their portfolio and work directly with clients.

Are Modsy stylists employees or independent contractors or how does that part work?

All are independent contractors, which means you can work from anywhere in the world!

What kind of hours do you and other stylists put in for Modsy and how many projects might you work on during those hours?

Most stylists commit to 20-40 hours/week.  Modsy stylists get to work on 20-30 projects per week (many more than the average interior designer!)

What’s your favorite thing about working for Modsy?

I’ve been at Modsy for 10 months and it’s been amazing!! It allows me the flexibility to continue traveling while utilizing my skills and background that I gained during my 10+ years in the interior design industry and fulfills my passion for tech, project management and design!

How about the money?  Is this side hustle money or main gig money for you?

It started as a side hustle for me, and within a month it turned into my main gig.

How much money have you been able to make through Modsy?

It varies depending how many hours you put in.  There are definitely months where I have other adventures and make less.

Is it about the money or the freedom for you?  I know you and your husband are experimenting with being digital nomads…

Both.  One begets the other!

Tara Smith, Modsy interior designer, thank you SO much for joining me on Easy Money!

Tara Smith Bio:

I am a Pacific Northwest native, but in September 2016 my curiosity about the world and my desire to learn and explore got the better of me and I began living as a nomad, traveling the U.S. with my adventure-loving husband.

I have always had a passion for beautifully crafted design, art and architecture, and in 2007 began my career by acquiring an interior design internship at Westport Yachts, assisting in the design of large scale, luxury yachts. After four years and a promotion from intern to interior designer, I left Westport Yachts to explore the area of residential design and found a home at Henredon & Schoener, a design + build company in Seattle WA. I was soon promoted to lead designer and put in charge of their new hire training program. In 2014 I made the difficult decision to go back to school at the CIDA accredited Art Institute of Seattle to acquire my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design while continuing to work full-in the design industry.

Going back to school fueled my passion for the tech side of design and so I shifted focus and began to specialize in 3D renderings and technical design documents. Work that I was able to complete while being on the road! I was intrigued with the concept of E-design and started researching all the major companies out there. When I found Modsy and saw what they were doing with not only design but 3D technology, I knew it would be a great fit for me, and luckily they were hiring!

I’ve been at Modsy for 10 months and it’s been amazing!! It allows me the flexibility to continue traveling while utilizing my skills and background that I gained during my 10+ years in the interior design industry and fulfills my passion for tech, project management and design!

EPISODE 46 ~ FIND YOURS: Girl Scouts: Help A Girl Scout Troop Find Its Unclaimed Money With A Simple Search

Find unclaimed money with The Easy Money Show

On episode 44 I told you about all of the boy scout troops owed unclaimed money.  Well, it’s only fair for me to give equal time to girl scout troops!  Title 9 and all that.

I once had the pleasure of surprising the Girls Scouts USA office in Pasadena, California with unclaimed money.  It was a win-win because I left with a couple of boxes of brand new types of girl scout cookies as a little thank you.

But there’s more out there!  Just now I searched the obvious term “Girl Scouts” on the missingmoney.com free website and got 35 hits for girl scout troops from Arizona to Wisconsin.

Some of the banks that have turned in money for the girl scouts are Capitol Federal Savings, Wells Fargo and JP Morgan Chase.  There are also businesses that had lost girl scout money, like Bon Ton Department stores and Bay State Gas Company.

When you’re searching for unclaimed money, you should try every logical set of key words you can think of, so next I searched “Brownie Troop.”  That yielded another half dozen missing money accounts, half of them near me in Virginia.

One fun thing to do is to search in Texas and California, the only two states that actually tell you the exact amount you are owed.  I tried putting “Girl” in the first name box and “Scouts” in the last name box in Texas —a good reminder to always try different combinations— and I got 33 pages worth of hits!  Each page has close to 20 listings.  Wow!

Right on page one was a big one: The Aransas Pass Girl Scounts Fund is owed $3,479 from a CD that matured and they never cashed in.  If you know anybody there, please pass the word!   Yikes, that same troop also lost track of a $3,248 savings account.  Sounds like the volunteer troop leaders in Aransas Pass are a little overwhelmed or disorganized.

The Challenger Girls Scouts Day camp in Houston has an unclaimed money account worth $1,149, an old checking account turned over by Woodforest National Bank.   And I found several other girl scout unclaimed money listings worth more than a thousand bucks.

Now why am I telling you this?  Well, if you are a troop leader, for goodness sake, SEARCH for your troop.  Money at not-for-profits is always tight and you could find the solution to your problems at MissingMoney.com or unclaimed.org, the two FREE sites I recommend for finding your unclaimed money.

EPISODE 45 ~ MAKE MORE: Mystery Shopper: Check Out This Legitimate List Of Companies Hiring Mystery Shoppers

Brandee in Texas listened to episode 8 about making money as a mystery shopper and she wanted more resources for actually getting into the business.

I am eager to please, so here goes, Brandee.  I got back in touch with Pamela Olmstead, President of the Mystery Shoppers Coalition and she very generously gave me a long list of legitimate companies that hire mystery shoppers.  This is important, because this is a field where scammers have tried to charge people for lists of jobs.

Pamela’s list includes 41 different companies that are not only for real, they are also in good standing with her organization which represents mystery shoppers.  So the jobs are real and these companies pay up!

Here’s a sampling of a few names of legit mystery shopping companies, in alphabetical order: About Face, Blink Research, Confero, Inc, DSG Associates, Eagle Eye Retail Intelligence Team —love that name—  Falcon Video Solutions, Guest Check and the list goes on all the way through the S’s, with a company called “The Source.”

It’s such a long list and I also want to give you each company’s web address.  So it doesn’t make sense to name all 41 companies here.  What I’m going to do is print the whole darn list at EasyMoneyShow.com/45

For those who need a refresher, companies hire mystery shoppers to go in and test their products, services and guest experience.  You can make good money as a mystery shopper AND save a ton of money, because you are often given  money to shop for things you need anyway, like groceries or dry-cleaning or oil changes.

One more bonus: The Mystery Shoppers Coalition is holding its annual conference in a couple of weeks, May 3rd through 6th in Atlanta.  If you want to get into mystery shopping, you will learn everything you need to know at this 3 day event.  AND, the best part is, it only costs $79.   I know my journalism and speaking conferences  cost WAY more than that.

So, especially, if you live in striking distance of Atlanta, you should give it a go!  Wow, that sounded like an Ad.  No, Easy Money is ad-free!  I just genuinely believe this is a great opportunity to learn a fun new way to MAKE MORE.

EPISODE 45 ~ SAVE MORE: Hospital: Reduce Your Medical Bills By Consulting Your Doctor Before Entering The Hospital

Save more money with The Easy Money Show

Let’s dive into our SAVE MORE topic for today: How to negotiate a better deal when you need to go to the hospital.

If it’s an emergency, you get a free pass. But if you know in advance that you are going to the hospital, you should ask for an itemized estimate of the charges.  I know this sounds crazy.  And yet, when I re-tiled my bathroom, I insisted on a written estimate. When I got the tie rod ends in my car replaced, I demanded one (not that I understood it). We need to do the same thing before we head to the hospital for elective procedures. We should act like consumers —not patients. No more blindly following “doctor’s orders.”

You can even find out if your doctor has privileges at multiple hospitals and could perform this procedure at any of them. If so, you can shop around and see which facility has the lowest charges for all the support your doctor needs when treating you.  I’m talking about the operating theater, the recovery room, the nurses, and so on.  A pointer: Often community hospitals are less expensive than university teaching hospitals.  Just make sure the cheaper hospital still has a good reputation.

Once you’ve identified the least expensive hospital, ask the people there if they are willing to offer you a flat fee or a percentage discount for the procedure you need.  Flat fees are usually the best deal of all because then your rate is locked in. A flat fee may even include anesthesia, if needed.  If you need to bring the price down even more, offer to pay cash in advance if you can afford it.  Hospitals spend a lot of time and money tracking people down to get them to pay.  Trust me.  Paying cash up front will be attractive to the hospital execs.  A Harris Interactive poll showed that 70 percent of people who ask a hospital for a break, do get a discount. So, go for it!

And get this: Sometimes it’s even cheaper to pay cash for a procedure than to cover your part after insurance.  One patient who needed a Knee Xray at a hospital, found out it would cost $600 if she paid with insurance, and SHE was going to have to pay that full amount because she hadn’t met her deductible yet.  So she offered to pay cash on the spot.  The hospital was willing to take $70 bucks there and then for the same x-ray.  Now THAT’s a deal!  AND the power of negotiating with hospitals.
