- EPISODE 58~ Could You Have Unclaimed Money From Utility Deposits? - When you go to sign up for gas, electric or water service, the utility company usually checks your credit score to see if you are likely to pay your bills. But if you’re young and haven’t established credit yet or if you simply have bad credit, they are obligated to do business with you anyway, because utilities are considered essential services. So what they do is ask for a deposit up front. Then, if you don’t pay your bills, they can tap into that chunk of money. And it IS a chunk. Utility deposits can be as little as $75 but as much as $300 or occasionally more.
